A Call to Action for Sustainability strategy, leadership and implementation in the independent schools sector in southern Africa

A customized Routes to Resilience programme presented by the Education and Sustainability Leadership Programme (ESLP), and the Impact Trust, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.

Following on from the ISASA Heads Conferences of October 2018, during which an urgent call was made to translate critical thinking to practical action by embedding education for sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into all aspects of learning, Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA is pleased to host this important programme, which will blend the power of the ESLP and Routes to Resilience Programmes, with deep interaction sessions between staff, management and youth.

As the recent IPCC report makes clear, the current economic, environmental and social trends are dangerously unsustainable. What contribution can and must the education sector play in responding to the impending crisis?

The education sector needs to reflect hard, and fast, on what it teaches, how it teaches, where it teaches and the standards it sets in terms of its culture, leadership and modelling the way.

Our talented multi discipline team is perfectly placed to drive forward an impactful program

Sustainable development goals achieved

4 Achieving inclusive and quality education for all reaffirms the belief that education is one of the most powerful and proven vehicles for sustainable development. This goal ensures that all girls and boys complete free primary and secondary schooling by 2030. It also aims to provide equal access to affordable vocational training, to eliminate gender and wealth disparities, and achieve universal access to a quality higher education.

Sustainability begins with education. This conference will seek to not only begin the process of designing an embedded curriculum but to also begin turning those principles into on site practice. This is why delegates will include all stakeholders in the community of UWC Colleges from the European region, including students, staff and academics

Sustainable Development SDG

In addition to examining their current emissions affecting climate, UWC participants will plan a campaign to ensure future generation of power is through renewable energy. They will also seek to address their historical emissions through programs of mitigation

Sustainable Development SDG

The UWC movement is well placed to leverage its network of stakeholders in order to develop a fully funded campaign to achieve the aims of CENDS30:50. Delegates will begin this process as they start to reach out to these stakeholders, thus extending their spheres of influence internationally.
